“Cooling Down Teen Stress is well laid out and

effective in dealing with teen stress issues.

The narrative approach is unique with good

advice suitable for students in any school

system.”   Rick S., BC Canada

“We use this teen stress book with our students.

It is required reading for my peer counseling

students so they can learn skills for managing

their own stress as well as for helping fellow

students who are feeling overwhelmed.

I highly recommend this book for its practical,

easy-to-read approach to teen stress

management. The students enjoy the story

approach and they easily identify with the girl

in the story because she faces many of the

same stressors that high school students deal

with on a daily basis. In student book reviews,

they often recommend this book as one that

all students should read.”

Carol S., High School Guidance Counselor,

Oregon, USA

"One of those rare books which addresses in

a practical way the life issues and stressors

facing teens today and tells a good story

in the mix." Peter. F., High School Chaplain

and Youth Leader

“I highly recommend this teen book. It is

a cross between a teen fiction story and self-help

book and deals with the stress in the life of the

typical teen. It offers solid, no-nonsense

guidance and advice on a range of issues

including dealing with grief, drug use and

abuse, peer issues, popularity, career choice

and just surviving school.”

Tony K., National Youth Director, Australia

“Students become engrossed in their reading

of this book.  Even during classes, it is often

difficult to get them to put it down. It takes a

realistic view of the pressures that teens face

in today’s society. With minimal guidance,

it allows teens to develop their own solutions

to problems. Many teens are reluctant to

become vulnerable in sharing their personal

struggles.  For this type of student, the book

is fantastic.  It allows them to maintain their

dignity while addressing uncomfortable

situations.

 In our classrooms, students responded

to this book with excitement.  The activities

at the end of the chapters intrigued them and

kept them glued to the story line.  It is a great

book for discussion within the class, and can

open the way for dialoguing on other relevant

issues not directly discussed in the book.

Through this book students learned many

coping mechanisms. They were excited to be

able to relate to the issues that were presented

and felt that the coping strategies were realistic

and achievable. One student says,

“It helped me understand not only myself

better but others too. It taught me to

communicate my feelings and other ways of

dealing with how I feel.”

Julie B., Principal,

Mamawi Atosketan Native School,

Hobbema, Alberta, Canada

Description:
Teens are stressed out today! It is not a figment of their imagination. The unrelenting influx of information and change make the turbulent teen years especially dangerous. Teen suicide rates are higher than ever as our 24/7 world moves faster and faster.

Teens need to feel more relaxed, more safe and more in control. Delight wrote this book while still a teen for teens. She presents eight easy to follow steps to cool off the teen stress soup that will make teen life more focused and enjoyable. The interactive wellness activities and being written in a story format by a teen for teens is what distinguishes it from every other teen stress book on the market.

The book tells the story of energetic and likeable Derisa Moore, a high school student in grade/year 12 who experiences the near suicide of one friend and the untimely death of another. All this while juggling the usual teen stressors of parental hassles, dating, grades and work. Collapsing under the pressure, she is helped by her older brother’s wellness counsel and support. She completes a difficult year with the necessary stress hardiness and skills to succeed and enjoy life.

Teens Are Stressed Today!

Dear Parent and Fellow Educator, Counselor,

My name is Cameron Johnston and after my own burn out in 1985, I discovered there were many folks just like me who were unaware they were on their way to suffering severe mental, physical and emotional crashes that could leave them unable to function as they had before.

Let me take a moment to introduce myself… I was working way too hard. I spent many hours away from my family. I was in a helping profession where so many people were counting on me to help them find answers to their problems. The overload became so bad I had a physical and emotional breakdown--known today as job burnout.

One day my body started to shake uncontrollably and didn’t stop for more than six hours.  Do you think that scared me? It should have but I did not know what was happening but eventually had to take two months off work and while I eventually healed, it took three years, I had to change professions.

I applied my Masters of Science in Public Health degree to running seminars on how to deal with stress and wrote a book called,

Don’t Eat the Stress Soup

as Hot as They Cook It!

which has been well received in the corporate world, the helping professions and with educators and anyone else who wishes to do more than just cope with stress.

Later, when my oldest daughter, Delight was in high school and was dealing with a variety of teen stressors similar to what I had gone through and experienced.  I encouraged her one summer to write the story line for what is now our teen stress book, Cooling Down Teen Stress (recently re-published in Australia).

Even as a teenager, she had a natural way to communicate with kids her age. She tells a simple story of a high school senior who finds herself under a tremendous amount of pressure. The book is about the challenges she faced and the strategies she used to cope with them.

Remember when we were kids?

How hard we thought we had it? And the stress we were under to get good grades… avoid the wrong people… and still have fun?

Believe it or not, kids today, especially teens, have it much tougher than we ever did. The influence of the media… cell phones… texting… facebook bullying…MORE drugs and alcohol than we ever faced – and all so open…

Yes, teens today are burning out

and younger and younger . . .

I can remember when I first graduated from university that if we heard of burnout it was in people in their mid to late forties, then it moved down to the mid-thirities, that was when I burned out. Today I see people all the time in my seminars seriously burned out in their early twenties and yes, even teenagers.

Life is moving faster and faster

and it is not a figment of our immagination. Most teens, and young adults for that matter, do not have the necessary coping skills or are using poor coping strategies like drugs and alcohol… and are far more stressed today than we were a few decades ago.

A recent study entitled, Confronting Teen Stress, Meeting the Challenge in Baltimore City identify five of the top stressors that seem to cause the most worry for teens:

1. School work (68%)
2. Parents (56%)
3. Friends' problems (52%)
4. Romantic relationships (48%)
5. Drugs in the neighborhood (48%)
The study also looked at how the teenagers coped with their stress.
For boys approximately. . .
  • 25% avoided or refused to deal with their stress
  • 23% sought ways to distract themselves from their stress
  • 17% sought support
  • 35% actively tried to reduce their stress
For girls approximately. . .
  • 19% avoided or refused to deal with their stress
  • 14 % sought ways to distract themselves from their stress
  • 22% sought support
  • 45% actively tried to remove or reduce their stress

Is it any wonder classrooms are difficult to manage?
More and more cities and school districts are looking at teen stress. Some are developing programs for teachers and families to help determine stressful situations and how to teach healthy stress relieving tactics.

Some are focusing on the kids themselves.  It is also  encouraging that many teens are actively seeking to reduce their stress and develop adequate stress coping skills.

Here’s How You Can Help

Unfortunately, the vast majority of teens aren’t even aware of their stress levels or how stress is affecting them. They go through their day to day routines and think it’s normal to feel the way they do.  Some of the fear, depression and pain that teens are experiencing seem to them as feeling normal and this is often reinforced by their peers.

So the FIRST thing any parent, teacher or counselor can
do is to help students be AWARE of their stress and
how it is affecting them.

Sure, you say… Good idea. But where do you do that not to mention how do you fit it into your schedule? And how do you get your teens attention long enough in the first place? And why should they even believe you if you were to have the time to discuss stress with them?

What if there was a way to get the information to them that’s easy to understand, fun and speaks to where they’re at?

Well… there is.

It’s a book called,

Cooling Down Teen Stress

This isn’t a dry textbook written by a professor that no one wants to read.

It’s a TEEN story written by a TEEN for TEENS.

That teen is (or was, she’s grown up now) my daughter, Delight.  As a teen, she sat down and wrote a unique teen story line tha teens love.  With a little guidance from me, and taking a practical approach to the subject, she completed her book in one summer., A summer,by the way, when she could not find any work--a major stressor that year!  As a teenager she had a natural way to communicate with kids her age. She tells a simple story of a high school senior who finds herself under a tremendous amount of pressure. The book is about the some of challenges she faced and the strategies she used to cope with them.

Cooling Down Teen Stress is filled with practical advice for teens who may not understand just how much pressure they’re under.

It starts with AWARENESS. The first chapter describes many of the stressors that affect teens and why they affect them. There’s a great simple stress test at the end of the chapter where teens can measure their own levels and determine for themselves how at risk they may be.

In total the book has 10 teen stress strategies that cool down teen stress.  In an easy-to-read manner, teens will discover the best ways to deal with stress.

For instance:
  • Chapter 1--helps teens assess their stress levels
  • Chapter 2--teaches how to control their stress response
  • Chapter 3--shows how physical activity helps with stress
  • Chapter 4--deals with high-octane fuel & the nutrition factor
  • Chapters 5 & 6--discuss several deep-seated stressors and how to resolve them
  • Chapter 7--encourages laughter and enjoying life
  • Chapter 8--explores gratitude and being thankful
  • Chapter 9--focuses on resolving grief and loss
  • Plus many other stress-busting strategies that work for most teens during their most stressful situations
All the major teen stress issues

are addressed  like dating, parents, money, jobs, grades, fear, guilt, suicide, grief, etc.

Plus the book is written in an easy, fun to read style that will have teens sharing and discussing these ideas with each other. You’ll see enormous differences in the kids in your house, your schools and your community.
